The Angel of the North is constructed
on the site of a former colliery pit head baths next to the A1 at
Gateshead. It was commissioned by Gateshead Council and created by the
sculptor Antony Gormley. Work on the statue was started in July 1997 and
it was assembled on-site in February 1998.
It's made of weather resistant steel, containing copper
which forms a patina on the surface, is 20 metres (65 feet) high and has a
wing span of 54 metres (175 feet).
