Sheffield Manor

The 4th Earl of Shrewsbury was responsible for the construction of Sheffield Manor House, begun in 1516 on the site of an earlier hunting lodge.  Mary, Queen of Scots, was most likely kept in the Turret House when she was imprisoned in 1568.

Stannington

Bowcroft Cemetery - Riggs High Road

Bowcroft Quaker Cemetery on Riggs High Road located on the edge of Stannington.

Bowcroft Cemetery, Ancient Quaker Burial Ground, wherein lie members of the SHAW Family of "Hill" and "Brookside" northwest of this spot, Bradfield Parish Council.

 

Here lyeth the body of Fines wid late of Willm SHAW of Hill who departed this life the 4th of the 5th month 1731 aged 56 years.

Here lyeth the body of Francis wife of George SHAW late of Brook side who departed this life the 19th day of April 1729 in the 2nd month in the 89th year of hir age.

Here lyeth the body of Fines MATHEWS late of Hill, who departed this life the 4th of the first month, 1729-8, aged 87 years.

Here lyeth body of William SHAW of Hill who departed this life in the second month 1712 aged 86.

Here lies the body of George SHAW late of Brooke Side who departed this life on the 5th day of the 5th month 1708 in the 75th year of his age. He suffered much for bearing his testimony against the payment of tythes.
