The Wharncliffe Works on Green Lane

This sign is situated on Penistone Road opposite the Globe Works. A H Smiths was once one of Sheffield's largest brewers, providing beers for up to 100 pubs between 1832 and 1916, when they were taken over by Tennant's. This sign is a reproduction, it's made from a cast of the original, which was located on the cigar stores on Penistone Road.

W A Tyzack, Green Lane Works, Industrial buildings have occupied this site since the 18th century, housing a range of activities including tanning, smelting, refining, founding and stove-grate manufacture. The gate house is part of a building erected in the 1850's. A bequest to be spent on "something of benefit to the public" provided the clock tower.

The Green Lane Works were built in 1850, commissioned by the owner: Henry E. Hoole,who was Lord Mayor of Sheffield in 1842.

Green Lane Works, this building was restored by W A Tyzack PLC with the aid of a grant from South Yorkshire County Council Environment Committee 1985.
