Coldstream

Following Cromwell's death in 1658 Parliament began to lose power and England was near to revolution and the Stuart monarch was in danger. General Monck marched his men from Berwick to Coldstream on 8th December 1659 where he set up headquarters in Scotland. On 1st January 1660, the Guards crossed the River Tweed to begin a 34 day march south to London, the mission was successful, Parliament's power was regained and Charles II was restored as King. General Monck's men were regarded as heroes, nicknamed 'The Coldstreamers' they were the only regiment to survive when the New Model Army was disbanded in 1661.

Only after the death of Monck in 1670 was the regiment officially named after the starting point of the march.
